Student Financial Services Terminology and Definitions

Direct Deposit

The University encourages students to enroll in Direct Deposit. Whether a student is entitled to a refund due to overpayment of an account, or is receiving wages from a work-study job or other University work arrangement, Penn can securely deposit funds to a U.S. bank account by signing up through Penn InTouch. Please note that direct deposit accounts will take 10 business days to become active.

Financial Hold

A student billing account is placed on financial hold when there is a past-due balance of $1,000
or more.

While an account is on hold, the student cannot register for the next term, obtain a transcript or a diploma. The hold will be removed after the outstanding balance is paid. If an account remains unpaid, it will be transferred to collections and there will be a Collections Hold placed on the account.

Graduation Hold

Upon graduating from Penn with an outstanding balance on an account, students will be placed on graduation hold. This hold does not allow the student to receive a diploma or transcript until the balance is paid in full.
